about

This song was one of the oldest ones I had written. I kept it in a scaffold state for about 2 years (it was actually started mid-way through The Greener Grass) and I put it away in mothballs for the longest time. When the creative juices had clotted, I happened upon the old .wav bounce and decided to recreate it for Idols. Instrumentally it’s one of the most diverse songs on the album, from Hard Rock to Drum and Bass, it’s a very transitional piece.

The lyrics are an all-out “us-versus-them” mentality. Being blinded and filled with rhetoric to the point where you no longer see fellow man, but instead something evil that must be eradicated and incinerated everywhere it is found. It is simultaneously idolizing your own, and vilifying everything else; it is the duality of possessing an agenda.

lyrics

Who gave you permission to breathe in my direction?
What compels you to believe?
Is it human nature?

You all walk like, you all talk like.
You’re claiming this your home.

(I will bring the weather, I withhold the storm.
I will scar the Earth with my scorn.)

Nihilistic, self-destructive.
A plague upon our throne.

(We will shake the cage.
We bite through the vice-grips round our necks.
And we consume.)

Consult the cure.

I pray -- listening, listening.
We wet our wings in oceans.
See what we made? It’s glistening, glistening.
We weigh our brains upon this throne.

Where we can do no wrong.

(Consult the cure.)

It’s in our hands, we’ll make it better.

You all walk like, you all talk like.
You’re claiming this your home.

(I will bring the weather, I withhold the storm.
I will scar the Earth with my scorn.)

Narcissistic, self-indulgence.
A plague upon our throne.

(We will shake the cage.
We bite through the vice-grips round our necks.
And we consume.)

Consult the cure.
